Palazzo Malacrida

The most beautiful Venetian palace… outside of Venice!

This magnificent 18th-century palace built by the aristocratic Malacrida family, who hailed from the shores of Lake Como, stands majestically in the heart of Morbegno’s upper old town quarter, Scimicà. The most striking example of rococo architecture in Valtellina, this unassuming-looking palace stands proudly above the town.

INSIDE PALAZZO MALACRIDA

Upon entering Palazzo Malacrida you step into a spacious atrium, with two granite columns supporting the cross-vault ceiling, adorned in the soft tones of intricate stucco. From here, the main hall is reached by a monumental staircase, under the dominance of Gian Pietro Romegialli’s painting depicting the Rape of Ganymede that fills the ceiling. The majestic hall of honour is home to the illusionist paintings by Giuseppe Coduri known as ‘il Vignoli’, with a daring architectural perspective that creates the illusion of a large, colourful garden. The ceiling is covered with the ‘Il trionfo della verità sulla menzogna’ (‘The Triumph of Truth over Lies’) masterpiece, one of the most acclaimed works by Cesare Ligari, while an adjoining hall depicts another of his works, Le Tre Grazie (‘The Three Thanks’).

Behind the palazzo, its Italian-style gardens extend above it with three terraces offering sweeping views over the town of Morbegno and across towards the Costiera dei Cech on the other side of the valley.
