The Rock Engraving Park

The park allow to discover a route combining nature and history

The smooth naturalistic route allows those who are fond of history, excursionists or just curious people to observe closely the remains that bear witness to an ancient past.
In the area between the municipalities of Grosio and Grosotto, the prehistoric population of Raethi has left his mark, engraving on the rocks charming scenes of everyday life. Those graffiti date back to a lapse of time which goes from the late Neolithic to the Iron Age: warriors, animals, anthropomorphous forms are distributed on the surface of the spectacoular "Rupe (Rock) Magna" which, including more than 5000 signs, can be considered the biggest engraved rock inthe whole Alpine arc.
His surface has been shaped by the erosive action of atmospheric agents, particularly by the melting of the glaciers, which have also imprinted a series of tracks on it. The anciest features, spirals and signs in the form of a upside down U, date back to the IV millenium BC, between the Neolithic Age and the beginning of the Copper Age. A group of figures represent some men in schematic signs, armed with curved shield and sword or stick. But the biggest group of figures- composed by armed men, goats and deers, snake-like signs and marks in the shape of maze- is thought to belong to the Bronze Age.
To fully enjoy the view it is suggested to visit the Park in the late afternoon when the dim sunlight allows the best showing of the engraves signs.
