Apiculture boasts a centuries-long tradition in the Valtellina, so much so
that in ancient times honey was used like coins in commercial barter, it
was virtually liquid gold
Today enthusiasm for the fascinating world of bees has resulted in the presence of more or less exclusive small or tiny companies that produce truly excellent honey throughout the Valtellina at over 1000 metres in altitude.
This is a product that marries the density of the valley honey to the more rarefied taste of the high mountain honey with a strain of lime honey that gives it a special balsamic flavour. The thousand-flower honey is mainly produced, while rhododendron is the most important and prized among the single flower varieties.
The thousand-flower honey produced in the Valtellina varies in flavour characteristics depending on the locality, the year and the crop, it has a special bouquet and aroma that creates an underlying theme among the various areas of the Province. Sampling, for example, the small amounts of honey produced near vineyards there seems to be a delicious flavour that is a variation on the theme, while the body and scent of honey made on the Orobic side of the valley, where the undergrowth is shady and fresh during the summer and provides a wonderful larder for the bees, seems even richer and full of flavour.
