Situated on the Rhaetian side of the Alps, near Sondrio, Castione enjoys a very good climate because it is well exposed to sunlight. In fact, besides the vine and the production of an excellent wine named “Grisùn”, there are many olive trees, oleanders, agaves, palms and magnolias. In the plain near highway 38 there are a lot of sheds where industrial, craft and commercial activities are carried out.
The most important part of the village was Andevenno, but in 1400 the residents moved to Castione because of frequent landslides. This area was fortified in the year one thousand with two castles but in 1500 the church of San Rocco was built on their ruins. In the Balzarro quarter there is the medieval church of Natività di Maria, that was renovated in 1600.
