Fusine - 285 m s.l.m.
The origin of Fusine, situated at the outlet of Val Madre, dates back to the fourteenth century, when a group of persons arrived here for iron quarrying. The metallurgical activity, after a period of decay (XVII c.) flourished again in the nineteenth century when the villagers and the forges were very important for the production of agricultural tools and surgical instruments. To visit the church of S. Lorenzo that preserves valuable frescos and stuccos of the seventeenth century, as the Oratory of San Rocco. In the quarter “La Civetta” there is a house of the fifteenth century with a fresco representing the Virgin and Child with a lively hue. In the village of Val Madre (1195 m. - 10 km), now uninhabited, stands the church of S. Matteo Apostolo of 1523. The economy of Fusine is based on agriculture and cattle-breeding. Industrial activities, above all metallurgical industries and cement working, have developed recently.
