Mazzo di Valtellina - 552 m s.l.m.
The village is situated on a rich plain surrounded by orchards, fields and meadows. On the right woody side there are various pastures. The road that goes to Valcamonica (province of Brescia) starts from here and crosses the Mortirolo Pass (1852 m) that is very famous because in the past it has often represented an important stage of the Giro d’Italia. Mazzo, today an agricultural village, was in former times very powerful. In fact it was the main town of the oldest parish of Valtellina, where the most important families of the valley (Venosta, Quadrio, Lavizzari) resided. It had also a great intellectual life: in 1525, before becoming Pope, Pio IV (Gianangelo de’ Medici) had been the dean of Mazzo and here lived also Pier Angelo Lavizzari di Vervio, founder of the Valtellina modern historiography. To visit the church of Santo Stefano, already known in 795, the Visconti Venosta palace with its beautiful colonnade, the S. Giovanni Battista baptistery (perhaps a pagan temple), the church of Santa Maria and the Lavizzari and Quadrio palaces. In the Pedenale quarter stands the homonymous tower, very well preserved, that belonged to the castles and posts erected to protect the area. In Vione there is the church of S. Abbondio, built in the fifteenth century, one of the most suggestive parish of Mazzo.
