The name of Sondalo appeared for the first time in a document of the eleventh century. In the half of the fourth century the village was already very important as proved by the existence of three churches: S. Agnese, S. Marta and S. Maria. A feud of the Misenti and the Venosta family (half of XII c.), builders the Boffalora castle, the village was damaged in September 1620 by the Swiss and Spanish troops, during the revolt against the Grigioni.
To visit the parish church of S. Maria Maggiore, finished in 1895, and the churches of S. Marta (1300) with frescos by Giovannino da Sondalo and S. Agnese, that dates back to 1100.
Sondalo has been a well-known place since the thirties because of the presence of a big hospital that treats pulmonary diseases. The village has a good hotel accommodation both for winter and summer. Val di Rezzalo is very interesting for its flora, fauna and beautiful ski-touring trails and it is connected to the Gavia valley through the Dell’Alpe Pass (2461 m.).
