Torre di Santa Maria
The village is situated on a morainic relief in the middle part of Valmalenco, at the outlet of Valtorreggio, near the Mallero river. The origin of the name (torre = tower) is due to the presence of a castle and some towers that were mentioned in a document of the fourteenth century. Nowadays the ruins can be seen in a place called “Volardi”.
Torre is a summer resort and a point of departure for excursions and ascents.
To visit the parish church of Santa Maria, built in the fifteenth century, reconstructed in 1620 and extended in 1919. It preserves a valuable painting by Fermo Stella that portrays the Adoration of the Child from the Virgin and the Saints.
The quarter Cà Bianchi is very interesting because there stands one of the most representative rocky complex in Valmalenco.
The economy of Torre is based, besides summer tourism, on limited industry (talc working and building stones) and commuting towards Sondrio.
