Museum of the Savage Man

Museum of the Savage Man - Foto 1 Museum of the Savage Man - Foto 2
The Museum of the Savage Man is an ancient rural residence housing images of the savage man, a true symbol of alpine culture

In Sacco, in the village of Cosio Valtellina, at the mouth of Valgerola 700 metres above sea level is this unique and interesting museum.
Inside on the first floor of a building in the hamlet of Pirondin, a cycle of frescos, works by the masters Batestinus and Simon dated 18 May 1464, cover the walls of the room completely. The four walls are painted with decorative floral and scroll patterns, with words and gothic letters in Latin and the vernacular quoting proverbs and moral maxims. There is not a lack of figurative art either, one example is of a hairy figure with a flowing beard, equipped with a gnarled club who presents himself as follows: “Ego sonto un homo salvadego per natura, chi me ofende ge fo Pagura” or “I am a Savage Man, whoever offends me be frightened”. The presence in the “camera picta” in Sacco of one of the most beautiful images of the savage man, one of the most enchanting figures of alpine mythology, was the reason why this small specialist museum was created.
