The Castle of Pedenale

Part of the complex fortification system that controlled the approaches to the Mortirolo Pass

Sat in the woods above Mazzo di Valtellina, the Castle of Pedenale is a complex defensive stronghold that was built to command the approaches to the Passo del Mortirolo.

The twelfth-century tower is the only remnant of the ancient castle built by the influential Venosta family. Well preserved today, it has a square-shaped plan, four storeys, and defensive walls with arrow slits and windows. Today, through a doorway in a high stone wall that opens up to a handful of terraced houses, visitors can see the old, fortified district of Pedenale.
