Val Vezzola

Two possible starting points for one great hike: either Sant'Antonio di Scianno (Valdidentro) or from the Torri di Fraele to include the Decauville.

Starting from Sant'Antonio di Scianno means you get things underway with a climb, but as a benefit you get to skip the dizzying drive up to the car park at the Torri di Fraele towers, which can get pretty busy. Follow route 196 up to Alpe Vezzola, where the path flattens off and winds through a cluster of mountain huts, some of which have been renovated. Soak up the views of Monte Trela and the Dosso Rosaccio.

The benefits of starting from the Torri di Fraele may save your legs from the initial rise in altitude, but results in a greater overall distance. Drop down a few hairpins from the Torri di Fraele towers until you spot the Decauville, which juts off the road a little further down. You will follow this pancake-flat gravel track until the junction with the 196 path.

As this is a section of a bigger loop, we recommend creating your own itinerary in advance on the ValtellinaOutdoor site, where you’ll find all the relevant details and can create custom routes.
