Val Fontana

A landscape with a sense of solitude and wilderness

Often overlooked when compared to its neighbours Valmalenco and Valle di Poschiavo, the much-smaller Val Fontana is as great a place as any to hike. It’s a valley with much less footfall, which means it’s the epitome of unspoilt nature that emits a genuine sense of solitude. Note: it doesn’t have a vast network of trails, but the existing ones are largely in good condition.

A HIKE TO THE GEMELLI LAKES

One of the most popular routes in Val Fontana follows a line to the Gemelli Lakes for a climb of 660 metres that will take roughly 2 hours from the beautiful Pian dei Cavalli.

The trek starts in a larch forest before emerging at Alpe Arasè into a world of little mountain huts set against a stunning backdrop of mountains. From here, the trail leads you back into another larch forest, over a former landslide, and onto a grassy clearing from where you can see the first lake. Keep climbing and you’ll soon see the second lake.

Start: Follow the directions from Ponte in Valtellina to Pian dei Cavalli. Parking spaces are located just after the wooden bridge.
Difficulty: Some hiking experience necessary
