Starting from the top of
Bormio’s highest cable car (first ride the 2000, then the 3000), this route
heads west on the S541 trail, descending to Bei Laghetti before Bocca di Profa.
The trail is wide to begin, but there are rocks and boulders to contend with.
If you’re on an MTB, expect it to be extremely technical.
The trail narrows once you hit Bei Laghetti, getting
firmer and more smooth-rolling under your feet (or tyres). This is a good spot
for a break to admire the surrounding mountains and the numerous lakes (try and
count all ten), with their deep, glistening colour as a result of mineral
sediment. Turn left onto the S518 path at Bocca di Profa and pull gently on
your brakes because there are a few steep sections coming up before you join
the gravel track to Monti di Sobretta.
Stick to the S543.2 for a smooth, easy route to Bormio
2000, passing Pozzo dell’Acqua and Fontanalonga. While it’s all downhill, the
dirt road has a few rises along the way.
Note: Check that the cable
car is running ahead of this excursion.
