This itinerary is of historical interest as some sections follow the old Roman caravan trail, the ancient trading route that connected Sondrio with Engadina via the Muretto Pass (2.562 m).
The complete route from Sondrio to Passo del Muretto is meant for pedestrians and the whole of the first part from Sondrio to Chiesa Valmalenco can be covered on mountain bike.
From Chiesa Valmalenco, passing through San Giuseppe and Chiareggio, the road is mainly unpaved of paths and mule tracks.
