The mythical Mortirolo needs no introduction – but you often need an easier ascent. Considered the least-challenging, this version starts at an elevation of 630 metres in Grosio, climbing 1,222 metres in 14.8 km. The gradient averages 8.3% and maxes out at 14.0%, which is perhaps why – although it has never been used as a climb in the Giro d’Italia – it was such a great launchpad for Thomas De Gendt to make his winning attack on the descent in 2012. For holiday-making cyclists in Bormio, this is the preferred option for the Mortirolo rather than the classic version from Mazzo, a decision that could be related to difficulty. It’s a stunning climb—especially once you’re past the first three kilometres, which are steep. From here, it’s flattens somewhat, winding through lush and forested scenery with postcard-perfect views of Valtellina. The steepest part comes between kilometre 10 and 11 as you pass an agriturismo. After that geographical marker, there are some more gentle hairpins where you can catch your breath before you pass the church and the Biorca junction, from where you’ll join the classic ascent of the Mortirolo to the top.
