Come to Alta Valtellina to hear the belling of deer in love. We often identify spring, with its reawakening of nature, as the season of love. While this may be true for humans, it is definitely not the case for deer. In fact, it is only at the end of summer that bucks find time for love, displaying their attractiveness and vigour to the females in the herd. Every year in Valtellina, between late September and early October, the forests echo with the uniquely intense and evocative belling of deer. 

Bucks live together in small groups throughout the entire year. But when autumn arrives, they spontaneously separate to later meet up and challenge one another, to the sound of belling. The buck that is most successful at intimidating the other suiters with his cry has first choice of females. In the event that his bell alone is not enough to scare off his rival, the bucks will lock antlers, pushing with force in an attempt to defeat one another.
