The 3 Barracks

Along tracks, through trenches, and past military posts from the First World War, this is a medium-level difficulty route that’s big on history

This route starts from the hairpin bend above the II Cantoniera on the road up to the Passo dello Stelvio – this is the point where the S505 trail heads into the Valle dei Vitelli. Once you’ve crossed a mountain stream, continue straight at the junction, following signs for Le Buse, where a military village was erected in the past, complete with a complex network of trenches covering the ridge behind.

From Le Buse, traverse the slopes of the Glandadura to Pian Pecci. At the next junction, ignore the trail that goes down to the I Cantoniera, instead continue on to the Passo del Crap dell’Aquili which will unveil some seriously panoramic views. From here, there’s a beautiful track to lead you back through pine trees and down to the road, bringing you out in a spot called Palone.

Roughly 9 km in length, expect this route to take between 3–3.5 hours
