Before the Chiesa della Madonna
della Misericordia di Malghera there’s a car park, where you’ll see a junction
with a gravel road going off to the left. Take the dirt track and turn right
past a cement water tank.
The wide track narrows into a
trail behind the watertank. It climbs constantly through rough grazing pastures
before bringing you out into a natural amphitheatre in the shadow of Monte
Sassalbo. Keep left as you reach the Lago di Malghera (2,316 metres) and skirt
around the western shore until the edge of the mountainous basin. From here, a
small valley rises up to the summit of the pass in a westerly direction.
The terrain turns rockier beneath
your feet as you gain elevation. Keep right as you scale this little valley;
there are some steep gradients and a rock field to cross – it’s the final
obstacle before Passo di Malghera at 2,542 metres.
The
other side of the pass is steeper but offers stunning views over Poschiavo and
its lake of the same name.
