The Alps, which protect the valley from the cold winds from the north and the hot, humid winds from the south; the warm breeze that rises from Lake Como; and the intense mountain sun create an ideal climate for wine growing on the northern side of Valtellina. The area around the provincial capital of Sondrio is home to some of the best DOC and DOCG wines in the region. The area is characterized by its impressive terraced vineyards and is crossed by the Strada del Vino (Valtellina Wine Road) and Via dei Terrazzamenti, and many estates offer cellar door tastings of local wines and products.
