With the XXV Winter Olympic Games running from 6 to 22 February 2026, Valtellina will get its first experience as a host site for the Olympic spectacle as both Bormio and Livigno will be in the spotlight, each deciding several events.
Bormio will be the host town of the Alpine skiing (men only) and ski mountaineering, which will be making its debut appearance in the Olympics.
OLYMPIC ALPINE SKIING ON THE STELVIO RUN
Known worldwide for its technical nature and spectacular scenery, the Stelvio run has been a staple on the World Cup calendar and previously hosted the World Alpine Skiing Championships in 1985 and 2005. This year, the 3,186 metre long piste that drops 987 metres with a maximum gradient of 63% will be decisive at the upcoming Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics.
The following Alpine skiing races will take place here:
Speed disciplines: downhill and super-G;
Disciplinary techniques: slalom and giant slalom;
Combined event: Alpine combined (one fast run plus one technical run).
There will be 5 medals up for grabs, with Downhill being the first on the calendar on February 7, 2026.
SKI MOUNTAINEERING
Making its Olympic debut, ski mountaineering ranks as one of the fastest-growing winter sports. Since 2010–2011, participation figures have more than tripled (33,000 in 2010/11–94,500 in 2019/20). The Italian national ski mountaineering team includes a host of local Valtellina-born and based athletes, which reflects just how much this valley adores the discipline and how well suited the landscape is to the sport.
The racing in Bormio will culminate in three medal ceremonies: Sprint (male and female) and the Mixed Relay.
