Established in 1947, the Valtellina's museum owes its origins to an initial group of scholars who, at the end of the 19th century, collected items of local history and culture.
Having grown since the 1960s thanks to the work of the first curator, Cav. Giovan Battista Gianoli, the Museum has now come to possess interesting archaeological collections, an art gallery with works from the 12th to the 19th century, a section of contemporary art, a plaster cast gallery, and a graphic collection.
In 1961, a section of sacred art was also established in the Diocesan Museum.
In 1994, the museum was transferred to its permanent location in Palazzo Sassi de Lavizzari, an elegant historic building, recently restored, where a , laboratory, a teaching room and a library have also been activated.
