For a hike that’s big on history, this particular route
plays out between Monte Scorluzzo and the Filone del Mot, exploring the former
defensive front between Italy and Austria from WWI. On 4 June 1915, the
Austrians overran this strategically important mountain, occupying it for the
remainder of the war and constructing a number of military emplacements and
trenches on the first part of the three ridges that lead down towards Filone
del Mot and the Passo dello Stelvio. For the Italian troops, it was a big
setback to relinquish this strategic position, putting them at a disadvantage
and forcing them to adopt a lower elevation than their opponents, seeing the
Italian army build their front line along the ridge of the Filone del Mot.
