In
the spectacular Stelvio National Park, the circuit of the Laghi di Cancano is a
real hit for all the family whether mountain biking or hiking.
The
route, which is minimally difficult and has little elevation gain, starts from
the medieval Fraele towers and follows a dirt track around the left side of the
Lago di Cancano, then continues to the Lago di San Giacomo. Along the way,
you’ll encounter dams built in the 1940s and 50s that still produce
hydroelectric power today.
During the summer months of July and August, which are characterised by a more significant influx of tourists, as far as Cancano is concerned, from 6 July to 31 August, there is also a restriction on vehicular transit on the road around the lakes from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a shuttle service is therefore provided.
During this period, it is also possible to reach the area by public transport, leaving from Bormio or by the Cancano Express service, operating from 6 July to 31 August. The service leaves from Piazza IV Novembre in Isolaccia at 09:30 and returns from Cancano at 17:00 (except on 13 and 27 July and 25 and 30 August). Between 10 and 18 August, an additional run departs at 10:30 a.m. and an additional return run at 6 p.m.
