Sentiero Roma

When it comes to long-distance high-altitude treks, Valtellina’s most significant route is the Sentiero Roma, which was set up by the CAI Milano, Club Alpino Italiano/Italian Alpine Club, in 1928. It was originally conceived as a way for alpinists and hikers to stay high and get from hut to hut in Val Masino without having to return to the valley floor each night.

At 54 km in length, the Sentiero Roma sticks above 2,500 metres of elevation for the most part as it crosses Val Codera, does a loop of Val Masino and concludes in Valmalenco. Depending on route choice, it usually takes 3–5 days to walk.

Every two years, the Sentiero Roma hosts the legendary Trofeo Kima race, one of the world’s most prestigious and technical skyrunning races with 4,200 metres of climbing over 52 km.
