Trekking in Val Grosina

Val Grosina is a wide valley that splits into two branches: Val d’Eita to the east, and Val di Sacco and Val de Dosa to the west. Rich in forests and punctuated with streams, countless crystal clear lakes, peaks and glaciers, Val Grosina is one of the most beautiful spots for hiking and mountain biking in Valtellina.

What sets Val Grosina apart is that it’s still widely used for farming during the summer months, which means much of Grosio’s local population head into the mountains as the mercury rises.

Suitable for families, this is a straightforward circular loop that knows how to put on a show with stunning panoramic views of Val d’Eita.

TREKKING IN VAL D'EITA - VAL GROSINA

Beginning from the car park in front of the Fabbriceria di Eita, follow the track that climbs up to the left (N201) towards Passo Verva. After approximately 45 minutes (1.6 km), you’ll spot a right turn to Rifugio Falck, the peat bog and Alpe Cassarolo. This is the route you’ll take on your return.

After another ten minutes or so of walking, you’ll get to a beautiful little lake called Acque Sparse, a perfect spot to enjoy the unique tranquillity that only a high altitude lake offers. Once you’re back on your feet, turn onto path N259.2 and follow it around to Rifugio Falck – unlike a staffed mountain hut, this is a bivacco, or an emergency shelter. From here, cross the peat bog on its new addition – a beautifully made wooden bridge – and continue to Alpe Cassarolo before joining the track back down to Eita.
