Very difficult due to its length, difference in altitude and steep climbs, often exceeding 15%, this route requires frequent use of medium/high pedal assist. From Vervio, a tarmacked road takes you to Rogorbello, where the road becomes steeper and its many hairpins pass through towns and villages before reaching the mountain chalets or baite of Susen, on a strip of meadowland with a lovely view of the Valtellina. The route continues, soon becoming a steep rough track, up to the harsh rocky strip marking the top of the valley. Through the car park and close to the waterfall on the River Saiento to the last short, very steep part along a mule track. Those who find pedalling impossible will have to leave their mtb here. You come out on the plain of the Schiazzera mountain refuge, a renovated building that used to be a finance corps barracks.
