The first part is very different from the second, with excellent slopes through to Carona and then Valcaronella with considerable gradients on rough and concrete roads that require medium/high pedal assist. From San Giacomo di Teglio to Carona it winds through thick vegetation, shady and cool even in the summer. The second part brings you to the first wide open plain in the valley, with a lovely picnic area. Continuing under a waterfall, the road then becomes more of a path with tight bends that make pedalling difficult. On the way down to Carona, you can turn right at the fork, reach the dam at Ponte di Ganda (Valbelviso) and turn westwards on a nice little path until you join the uphill route again. At the moment (2018) this short stretch is unfortunately blocked by a landslide, leaving it exposed and therefore not recommended.
