People often associate Valtellina exclusively with skiing,
hiking, the great outdoors, and, of course, a satisfying dish of pizzoccheri
but that’s doing a disservice to its wine producing credentials. Valtellina has
two certified DOCG wines – Valtellina Superiore and the Sforzato (or Sfursat)
di Valtellina – as well as Rosso di Valtellina DOC and IGT Alpi Retiche wines.
As such, any trip to Valtellina would be incomplete without
a visit to local wineries to acquaint yourself with Valtellina wine, the steep
vineyards in which it is produced, as well as the history and philosophy of the
local producers.
Tastings at local wineries represent a typical experience in
the wine world, but Valtellina also offers a range of more unusual wine
experiences including:
a walk
through the vineyards (this is fundamental to understanding the reality of the
hand-harvested wine production here);
a combination of wellness and wine, relaxing at a spa with an open-air hot tub
and wine tasting session
a dining experience – lunch or dinner – with full immersion
in Valtellina’s rich gastronomic heritage
