Hiking in #Valtellina means discovering new and ever-changing amazing views. Old towns and protected natural reserves, easy footpaths that follow streams and steep trails leading to high peaks. You have a wide choice. For expert hikers, the Alta Via della Valmalenco (8 stages) beckons. It is a 130-km journey dominated by the mountain peaks Pizzo Scalino and Pizzo Bernina. The Sentiero Roma takes you through the mountains in Val Masino. In Valchiavenna, the hiking trails "Via Spluga" and "Via Bregaglia" are wonderful. The "Sentiero Rusca" goes from Sondrio to Thusis (Switzerland). Other interesting hiking trails are the "Gran via Delle Orobie", the "Sentiero della Pace" in upper Valtellina, which crosses the battlefields of the First World War and the "Via Alpina in Valtellina", a long itinerary in 342 stages that crosses eight countries of the Alpine Chain: the Valtellina is part of this fascinating journey with 14 stages from the Stelvio Pass to the Valchiavenna. And, finally the "Via del Vino e del Sale" (from Bormio to Switzerland) and the "Via dei Terrazzamenti", from Tirano to Morbegno, through terraced vineyards and old towns: #wonderful!
Livigno (1816 m a.s.l.) lies in the centre of the
Rhaetian Alps, between the Stelvio and the Bernina passes. Livigno was a
property of the Count of Bormio and achieved its administrative autonomy in 1816.
The customs benefits, which had already been ratified by Napoleon and Austria, were confirmed in 1948, as the
duty-free area was declared. Livigno is Italy’s second highest town council and
is called for this reason the “Piccolo Tibet” (Little Tibet). Today this
village is a best-known destination for branded shopping: clothes, electronics
and so on. It is laid on a 15-km long valley crossed by the Spöl (Aqua Granda),
tributary of the river Inn, which – in turn – is tributary of the
Danube. The winter season goes from November to May. Livigno is considered as
one of the top-destination in Europe thanks to its modern ski lifts and
state-of-the-heart ski runs and trails and is able to offer many opportunities
for the summer season too: it is a paradise for all mountain lovers and keen
bikers looking for breathtaking panoramas. Indoor fitness and sport at Aquagranda
too, a cutting-edge facility provided with the best-equipped gyms and a wide
swimming pool. Art and culture find their full expression in the parish church
of the Natività di Maria Vergine (Nativity of the Virgin Mary) (1477), the church
of S. Antonio (1589) and the church of San Rocco (1591), as well as in the "tee",
the typical abodes of inestimable value.
