The Roma Path

Forty kilometres of open horizons, at an average altitude of 2400-2500 metres above sea level, is an adventure called the Roma Path (Sentiero Roma), in the beautiful Val Masino

This route, for expert excursionists, is a hiking classic, meriting being included amongst the most famous and popular itineraries of the whole alpine region. It allows you to walk through the entire top of Val Masino, passing on foot some of the most famous peaks (Pizzo Badile, Pizzo Cengalo, Cima di Castello, Mt. Disgrazia) and climbing over the many inter-valley mountain passes which, each time, open before your eyes a new and beautiful panorama. It is along the Sentiero Roma that the now traditional mountain running race, the Kima trophy is organized, where the world’s best athletes run the entire race in less than six hours.

Following are the usual five stages that require having high mountain experience and a good physical preparation.

Day 1: Bagni di Masino 1172 m - Omio Refuge 2100 m (2 hours). From the beech wood above the Baths of Masino, you climb the alpine pastures of Alpe dell’Oro until arriving at the refuge.

Day 2: Omio Refuge 2100 m - Gianetti Refuge 2354 m (4 hours). Climbing over the east Barbacan Pass 2684 m, from which open a beautiful view of Pizzo Badile and Pizzo Cengalo, you descend using some fixed cords in Porcellizzo valley, from there you continue at a high altitude to Gianetti.

Day 3: Gianetti Refuge 2354 m - Allievi Bonacossa Refuge 2385 m (6-7 hours). A succession of narrow passes along the most “open air” stage: the Camerozza Pass 2765 m with the most difficult descent of the entire hike (fixed cords); the Qualido Pass 2647 m; the Averta Pass 2585 m.

Day 4: Allievi Bonacossa Refuge 2385 m - Ponti Refuge 2559 m (7-8 hours). After the Val Torrone Pass 2518 m a slow climb to the next Cameraccio Pass 2590 m starts, it is the “Cima Coppi” of the Sentiero Roma, as to reach it at the beginning of the season you pass extensive patches of snow. Pass the wide Cameraccio Valley you climb to Bocchetta Roma 2850 m, at the foot of Mt. Disgrazia, from here you descend finally to Ponti.

Day 5: Refuge Ponti 2559 m - Filorera 841 m (4 hours). It is all downhill and bit by easier: after the incredible fluvial meanders of Piano di Preda Rossa, you descend to the woods of Sasso Bisolo, where you find the Scotti Refuge 1462 m from which you continue along the road until Filorera and Cataeggio.
