Grosio - 656 m s.l.m.
Agricultural centre of the upper Valtellina, Grosio was in the fourteenth century a feud of the Venosta family and in the seventeenth century it had important business relations with Venice through the Mortirolo Pass. The area was already occupied in the prehistoric age and this is testified by the presence of rupestrian inscriptions dating back to 2200-1000 BC. They can be found on the surface of the “Rupe (Rock) Magna” where the Castle of S. Faustino (old castle) and the Castle of the Visconti Venosta family (new castle) also stand. On the western part of the hill there is a Romanesque bell tower and two graves digged in the rock lie at its foot. To visit the parish church of S. Giuseppe (XVII c.) whose interior is completely frescoed with different styles and periods, the native house of Cipriano Valorsa, a painter of the area known as the “Raffaello of Valtellina” and the Visconti Venosta villa (now a civic museum) with its huge park. Here, the women of the village wear in particular occasions the traditional costumes of the seventeenth century. From Grosio, seat of a big hydroelectric power plant, you can reach, after Ravoledo, the beautiful Valgrosina that preserves a pure environment with a lot of typical mountain houses.
